Scouts win in walk-off

XENIA, OH – Andrew Spleth came up to the plate in the bottom of the 11th inning searching for redemption. Spleth was hitless through five at bats and had previously struck out three times on the evening. With Andrew Douglas on second, Spleth got his redemption with a single to left that just got past the diving attempt of Grand Lake Mariners shortstop Cory Klenke. Douglas scored and the Scouts won the season opener by a score of 9 to 8.

In a game that featured 30 hits and 17 runs, BJ Willis and Andrew “Douggie Fresh” Douglas led the Scouts with four hits and 2 RBI a piece. Douglas was 4-4 with two walks and Willis finished 4-6. Trey Rallis also contributed to the hit total with 3 hits of his own and 3 RBI.

The Scouts led 7 to 4 going into the 9th, but a three run rally by the Mariners tied the game. Grand Lake took the lead 8 to 7 in the 10th, but the Scouts responded on a Tom Wertz double to tie the score at 8. Caleb Allen picked up the win by pitching a perfect  11th inning, providing Spleth the opportunity to hit a walk off single for the victory.

The Scouts are now 1-0 and will play at Delaware against the Cows on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm. Click on the Teamline button on the homepage for audio broadcast of the game, or follow the action with live updates at www.twitter.com/xeniascouts.
